My work as a composer and conductor is, at its core, a search for passion; sometimes intense, sometimes playful or gentle, but always leaning into, reaching for a deeper and clearer expression of passion.

The music I write is primarily text-driven--the flow of the music a dance partner for the words, supporting them, nurturing them, adding strength or backing away. Whether the text is a Psalm of lament, a poem of love, or words spoken as a dying wish, my desire is to invite the listener (and myself) to more fully embrace the power of words -- the music allowing them to sneak past our defenses and distractions and inattention. Even in the writing of a string quartet or other instrumental ensemble, I imagine, if not a text, a "context" sung through the instruments.

Making music with and for other people is the finest kind of community -- an intimacy that makes us more than we are individually, connects us to each other in powerful ways and illuminates before us the path to feeling and passion.

	A setting of texts from Khalil Gibran's The Prophet, commissioned by the International Choir of Hildesheim, Hildesheim Germany.
	Bear Me Gently, Neil Kjos (SATB)

	Esto Les Digo, Alliance (SATB)
	This a capella, Spanish setting of a scriptural text has been performed widely across the US, Canada and Europe, including a performance at St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. The harmonic structure is lush and vibrant, tonally based but with colorful non-chord tones. It is contemplative in nature with a pace that makes the Spanish text very accessible for non Spanish-speaking choirs. It ends with a short soprano solo floating above the choir. Also available in an SSA arrangement.
